I have covid and I've watched all the Missions Impossible, here are my thoughts

Tom Cruise dangles from the ceiling and tappy taps on the computer in Mission Impossible

The Missions Impossible work best when the movie is aware that it's very silly and when Tom Cruise doesn't realise at all.

It's the action spy movie version of the classic comedy truth that playing something straight is funnier than leaning into the joke. William Sadler in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. Enrico Colantoni in Galaxy Quest.

We need Tom Cruise to take everything seriously in order to fully buy into it, and we need everything to be very silly in order to have a fun time at the movies. The worst thing any action movie can do is run away from the fact that it's very silly (complimentary) and that is ramped up a notch when you add in spy gadgetry.
